Daisugi is an ancient Japanese forestry technique. The mother tree is pruned to send up perfectly straight shoots to create a completely sustainable priced cedar source. The Sugi cedar lives on for hundreds of years with the platform tree unharmed. I saw a photo of these such tree and was completely fascinated. Such ingenious was of working with nature have been around over hundreds of years. Taking care not to desolate and nurturing the soil and root. In the age of massive excess and waste ancient crafts have been ignored for the sake of profit.

This painting is a direct response. The layers of timber scar the land, layer in back to the earth. The mother Sugi tree, the platform cedar. Kitayama tree shooting out and beginning to populate the surface.

Acrylic, enamel, water based varnish. Reclaimed oak veneer. Thick painterly texture. A truly incredible multi faceted are works with depth and character.

Dressed in a black shadow gap frame. Not a scrap of paint leached into waterways. Paint tubes recycled ♻️
